To Ride the Crane West, or To Return West is a Taoist term for death. It alludes to the Crane’s mythical associations with immortality and ascending to the heavens. Exploring China’s turbulent relationship with Western religions, which was riddled with centuries of oppression and exploitation, the book is split into two separate narrative forms that represent the state of the relations between the East and West, shown through the increasingly haphazard grid system.
